So you've decided that chiropractic is the profession that you wish to pursue, what's next? It's time to figure out what school to attend. This process can be both intimidating and nerve-wracking, but don't worry. Here are five questions that I asked which, ultimately, led me to choose Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC).
What's Overland Park, Kansas like?
Remember, you are going to be attending CUKC for more than three years, so it's important to like the area surrounding your institution. Overland Park is hands down one of the best places to attend school. In fact, in 2016 Niche.com ranked Overland Park #6 as one of the best places in the U.S. to live. (Niche is a website that ranks schools and communities based on their crime rate, cost of living, amenities, and career opportunities.) Check out opkansas.org if you are interested in what else Overland Park has to offer.
What's the student body like?
From the first time I stepped on the CUKC campus, I felt welcomed. I received many tips on studying, was handed notes to help me with classes, and I was even paired with a mentor on the first day. This is a campus that is oriented for your success. The students here understand what you are going through, so they go out of their way to lend a helping hand.
What are classes like?
I chose CUKC because of the small class sizes. The low student to teacher ratio here means that professors will know you by name, can provide you with individual direction, and will happily accommodate your learning style. Another huge bonus is that a lot of the professors here submit board exam questions and really teach you what you need to know for your future practice.
How well will I be prepared for the board exams?
You will take four different board exams, plus a physical therapy exam to become a doctor of chiropractic. These tests stand between you and becoming a doctor, so they are pretty big! Knowing that CUKC students far outpace the pass rates at other colleges helped to reassure me that I was being prepared for success.
How do I get involved? While attending class is a key to success, clubs offer additional learning and social opportunities. Here are just some of the CUKC clubs: Activator, Motion Palpation, Student American Chiropractic Association (SACA), Sports Council, Pediatrics, and Animal Chiropractic. Most clubs meet over lunch, and all you have to do to join is attend their meeting.
Finding the answers to these questions will help you determine if Cleveland is right for you. One of the best ways to figure out your path is see for yourself all that CUKC offers.
