A campus ambassador is my favorite position I held being a student. I got to brag about the place I called home for much of the week, as well as about the amazing profession I’m was pursuing. A few of my favorite parts when touring with new students include meeting and talking with Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III, the president of the university, visiting the cadaver lab, and of course, lunch!
Chiropractic College at CUKC: Founded in 1922
You might be wondering about the connection between Dr. Cleveland and Cleveland University-Kansas City. Well, when you come and tour our campus, you’ll get to meet Dr. Cleveland, the president of the university, and the grandson of the founders. It is so neat to talk with Dr. Cleveland about the history of CUKC and the profession because he experienced it firsthand growing up. You cannot help but smile when you are listening to the stories, because he is so passionate about the future of the university and the profession.
My next couple of stops on the tour of the chiropractic college included the technique labs and cadaver lab. This is where you see my passion for the profession come alive. The cadaver lab is always a fun experience because you either have students who know exactly what to expect and want to be shown all the anatomy of the human body, or you have the few who cover their nose with their shirt collar.
Good news, though, our cadaver lab is on a completely different ventilation system than the rest of the university, so you will not smell the formaldehyde unless you are in the dissection lab. The cadaver lab is an amazing study tool available to our students at CUKC.
“The material stuck 100 times better in any class that required me to be in the cadaver lab,” I always told new students. “It forced me to go through all the anatomy and be able to say this is the femoral artery because of this structure, this structure, and this structure surrounds it.”
Although there were many other stops along the chiropractic college tour, including our student and outpatient clinics, Cafe Cleveland was my favorite. Lunchtime was also when prospective students asked me questions. I loved watching them go from thinking they might want to be a chiropractor, to knowing they want to attend the College of Chiropractic at Cleveland University-Kansas City.
