Deciding on a career path can be a stressful task and often leaves us seeking answers to a series of questions. What school is the best fit for me? What school will provide me with the knowledge to succeed? What can I expect while being a student? These are all questions that I struggled with and by attending an open house it helped me pick Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) as my educational home.
1.) Talk with students
Nothing is better than talking with students who are actually in the program that you are interested in. During an open house visit, you will have the opportunity to speak with a panel of students who can answer any questions that you might have. This allows you to get the inside scoop on what to expect here at CUKC. The biggest thing that I remember taking away from the student panel was learning about the many clubs on campus, and how easy it was to get involved.
2.) Learn more about the programs
During an open house event, the CUKC faculty is here for you. If you have questions about financial aid, clubs, or questions for current professors, etc. you can get every question answered at once. When I attended the open house I still had a lot of questions about what chiropractic really was and being able to talk with a current professor, I was actually able to obtain a lot of information. I know that some of my current classmates attended an open house and learned a lot more information about the undergraduate programs.
3.) Hear from graduates
One of the best parts about an open house event is hearing from a graduate of CUKC. They are able to talk about their first steps into the CUKC family and also talk about their transition after graduation. For me, this allowed me to plan out different steps to take while I am in the chiropractic program.
4.) Networking
A lot of the prospective students that come to the open house are in the same boat as you, so it is nice to pick their brain and hear why they may be interested in the different degree programs that CUKC offers. Also, the very students that are with you on the tour, could also be starting the program when you are, so it is nice to meet people ahead of time.
5.) Getting to know the area
Perhaps one of the biggest determining factors besides the quality of education that a school provides is the area in which the school is in. I suggest making a weekend out of an open house visit, and get to know the area around CUKC. Whether you are interested in the undergraduate program, the Master of Science in Health Promotion, or the Doctor of Chiropractic degree, you are going to be spending a decent amount of time in the area. So, while you are visiting CUKC, also see what Kansas City has to offer.
