One of my biggest concerns when starting school here at Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) was how I was going to live on a student budget. I wasn’t sure if the financial aid provided would be enough to help me cover all of my bills. Well, like any other student, it’s important to budget carefully, make sure not to eat out too much, and be careful splurging on things you might not really need.
When it comes time to pay for an extra seminar that you really want to attend or that last bill for the month, then you’ll be glad you cut back in other areas. But, what if you don’t want to cut back? Or, cutting back is not enough for the amount of seminars you want to attend? Luckily, there are a couple of different options at CUKC to help you make a little extra money if needed.
There are plenty of work-study opportunities at CUKC for those who would like to work just a few hours a week. You also might not want to risk going off campus and having a workplace that doesn’t understand your school schedule, or when you need to take off to study. That makes work-study opportunities even more appealing. There are positions to work in the clinic, teaching assistantships, and other office aide positions.
If that doesn’t work for you and you’re doing well in your classes, then maybe you would like to be a tutor. Sign up to tutor and students will contact you if they require assistance. You just have to set up a time that works for both you and the student, so once again, it is easy to schedule around classes and study schedules.
One more idea is to keep an eye out for scholarship opportunities throughout the year. Cleveland is great about including open scholarships in their weekly emails. CUKC also has a packet of scholarship essays that you can apply for every fall trimester. Jumping on a few of these chances will make it easier to pay that final bill, go to that extra seminar, or splurge a little on Christmas gifts at the end of the year.
