A message from Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III, president
Greetings Clevelanders,
The University is pleased to welcome all new and returning Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) students, faculty, and staff to the Fall 2020 term. CUKC took a slow and cautious approach in the return to on-campus activities in the face of COVID-19 during the Summer 2020 term. This continues as the fall term begins. This approach is driven by our objectives of protecting the campus community’s health and safety, sustaining the continuity of the student educational experience, and managing risks to protect the future of the University.
CUKC continues to follow recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) to include screening upon entering the building, wearing masks, and maintaining six feet of social distance. The Facilities team provides extended cleaning and equipment wipe-downs throughout the day in the classrooms, labs, fitness center, and Health Center.
Classrooms have been reconfigured to allow proper physical distancing per the CDC’s current guidelines.
On-site food service will not be provided until further notice.
The information that follows serves as an update and a reminder regarding the Fall 2020 course schedules, and the return to on-campus administrative services.
Administrative Services Staffing
On Monday, Aug. 31, concurrent with the start of the College of Health Sciences fall term, all academic and administrative departments started providing on-campus services on a modified basis.
College of Health Sciences (CHS)
The fall CHS programs began Monday, Aug. 31. All lecture and laboratory instruction for the AAS in Radiologic Technology, AAS in Occupational Therapy Assistant, and BS in Human Biology programs are scheduled for on-campus presentations. The smaller CHS classes allow the University to accommodate social distancing requirements within the existing CHS classrooms and labs.
College of Chiropractic (DC)
The Fall 2020 DC Program begins Tuesday, Sept. 8, as a blend of remote delivery with limited on-campus lecture sessions. These on-campus lecture sessions will be scheduled over the first 14 weeks of the term as either one-hour class sessions every other week, or one hour each week. Every course (except for ninth-trimester DC online courses) will have a minimum of seven opportunities to meet on-campus this fall term. The number of class meetings is dependent on the number of credit hours for each course.
Specific DC course information is available on cleveland.edu under “Fall 2020 DC Schedule Information.”
These scheduled sessions will provide face-to-face classroom interaction between the students and the course instructor to supplement the remote course delivery experience. The focus of these on-campus meetings will be to cover difficult concepts, answer questions, review material, and for assessments.
All DC on-campus lecture sessions will occur in the Dining and Assembly Hall for the fall term.
The CUKC Chiropractic Health Center continues to provide patient care, and appointments may be scheduled by calling 913-234-0700.
Leading the Way
Clevelanders, as public health professionals, you can actively spread our University’s mission as a leader in health education and promotion on and off-campus. One way to get involved is by emailing your #CUKCmaskie photos to communications@cleveland.edu. (A maskie is a selfie photo taken while wearing a mask.)
Please remember that these plans are subject to change. Regularly monitor your CUKC email and the cleveland.edu/covid19 webpage for updates. We look forward to the safe and measured return to campus activities.
Thanks to all for your continued cooperation. Stay safe, and be well.
