I had no intention to become a chiropractor, but I was involved in a serious car accident in which I suffered a back injury. After undergoing physical therapy, injections, and even surgery, I still was suffering from pain. It was not until I saw a chiropractor that I began to feel relief. It absolutely changed my life as a patient, to the extent that I realigned my career goals to become a chiropractor. I chose to come to CUKC because it not only prepares you to be a knowledgeable doctor, but the community found on campus will allow you to establish long-lasting connections.
I chose CUKC because of how welcoming the environment is. Everyone, from the faculty to the students, do their best to provide assistance and teach each other how to be successful in this program. Growing up in the Kansas City area is just as rewarding, as you will find that there are many events downtown, and places to go when in need of a study break. Not to mention all of the excellent coffee shops you can find between downtown and campus!
I chose Cleveland University-Kansas City because it felt like home when I visited. Everyone I met was really friendly, the cafeteria food was super yummy, and many of my questions and concerns about the chiropractic profession were acknowledged and answered! The CUKC family wants you to succeed not only in your program, but in each aspect of your life! Majoring in exercise science at Nebraska Wesleyan University gave me the opportunity to explore a variety of professions including physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiology, nursing, and pharmacy; yet I kept coming back to chiropractic. Something about the sincerity of chiropractic doctors and their care really captured my attention. Chiropractic is a profession that allows me to think critically and solve the complexities of each patient’s condition. Being a doctor of chiropractic provides the educational background and autonomy to diagnose while being accessible to all patients without a prescription. Attention can then be placed on what is best for the patient noninvasively. Patients receive treatment that they understand, and results that can change their lives.
I always knew I wanted to be involved in a health care profession and fell in love with Chiropractic after I shadowed a D.C. in my hometown. Later, after learning about the philosophy behind chiropractic, I was hooked, and I can’t wait to help heal and serve the community.
I realized that I made the right choice by coming to CUKC in my first trimester, when Dr. Cleveland III began to speak to us in lecture about the two main categories of chiropractors. The differentiation between straight and mixed chiropractors isn’t what made the difference, it was the fervor in which he explained that both types of chiropractors can get a strong, affirmed education here. I get fresh perspectives everyday by conversing with members of Philosophy Club, Adjust Club, and MPI Club. I owe my affinity for chiropractic care to my roots in a blue-collar family. The act of helping someone else is at the base level of all professions, but there aren’t many that allow one to physically feel and heal issues with their hands. I can help my neighbors using my given and learned skills in a palpable way, through my hands, as opposed to an abstract way through medications.
I got into with chiropractic through my involvement with chiropractic treatment during athletics, my experiences growing up with the chiropractors in my family, and my interest in the natural healing power of the body. Through chiropractic, we are able to restore the healing power to our patients, fix the problem, and stimulate natural healing and wellness. I chose Cleveland because of its location and the family atmosphere around campus. The campus is inclusive, supportive, welcoming, and is full of people that want you to succeed. Kansas City provides opportunities for both inside and outside of the classroom with the many chiropractic offices in the area, allowing for shadowing experiences and networking opportunities, and through the entertainment opportunities in the area.
I chose CUKC primarily because of its location. I attended undergraduate school in Olathe, Kan., and it was the only chiropractic school where I would have a support system within 30 minutes of where I would be attending school. It also helped that I was familiar with the area. I didn’t tour any other schools, but after meeting people from other schools and chatting with them, I believe CUKC would have been the right choice for me in the end anyway.
