In February 2020, the FDA approved the first and only intravenous preventative treatment for migraine headaches. But as researchers at CUKC found, in some cases drugs are not needed to provide help with migraines.
Chiropractors take a conservative, drug-free approach to improving health and wellness. Such an approach inspires life-changing scientific research on health topics, including the treatment and prevention of migraine headaches.
March 19-21, 2020, chiropractic educators from Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) are leading a platform presentation on magnesium supplementation for migraine prevention at the Association of Chiropractic Colleges Research Agenda Conference 2020 (ACC-RAC) in San Diego, California.
Migraines affect more than 39 million people in the U.S., according to the Migraine Research Foundation. Such headache disorders are a top public health concern that presents social and economic burdens.
Dr. Pfefer and his team including doctor of chiropractic students, Rachel Gilmore, Jaden Butcher, and Connor Buckles, will present a systematic review on the prevention of migraine using magnesium supplements. Dr. Pfefer and his team found evidence that adding foods high in magnesium and sometimes adding magnesium supplements can be effective in preventing migraine headaches from occurring.
In addition to the migraine prevention platform presentation, ACC-RAC 2020 has accepted multiple peer-reviewed CUKC abstracts on a variety of subjects. CUKC has prepared for ACC-RAC audiences eight platform presentations, eight poster presentations, and a workshop.
Dr. Mark Pfefer, CUKC director of research and professor, looks forward to attending the conference this spring.
“We have an extensive list of co-authors including faculty, students, and external collaborative partners who contributed to the research we are presenting at ACC-RAC 2020,” Pfefer said. “I’m pleased to see first-time faculty and student co-authors contributing to our research efforts as well. These efforts and findings demonstrate that CUKC continues to be quite productive in scholarship and research.”
CUKC has been educating leaders in chiropractic and the health sciences since 1922. Doctors of chiropractic view the human body as self-regulating and self-healing, and they focus on the musculoskeletal system. By combining chiropractic care with lifestyle and nutrition advice, chiropractors help patients achieve health and wellness.
ACC-RAC 2020 celebrates 27 years of leading chiropractic educational advancement. The conference attracts chiropractic thought leaders and the best of current scientific research. ACC-RAC is believed to be the only event that has all of the major North American chiropractic educational programs represented.
The following is a full list of CUKC accepted, peer-reviewed abstracts for presentation at the Association of Chiropractic Colleges Research Agenda Conference in San Diego, California, March 19-21, 2020.
