Numerous evidence-based research and public opinion results continue to put chiropractic care in the spotlight. This research is great news for students pursuing a chiropractic degree who are eager to make a lasting difference in the lives of their patients.
More people and more medical practitioners are looking for ways to relieve pain without medication or invasive surgery. Doctors of Chiropractic are eager to share the research that is helping to shape people’s opinions about the profession and open doorways for optimal health and wellness over one’s lifetime. What is that research, and where is it coming from?
In 2017, a summary of scientific research findings and opinion surveys to date was published in a 44-page report titled Chiropractic: A Safe and Cost Effective Approach to Health, which was updated in 2022 with more information, including the emerging role of chiropractic in interdisciplinary care, at Veterans Administration clinics, and in workplace wellness.
Just in the last six years, four major medical journals have acknowledged the preference for conservative approaches to pain management, including spinal adjustments by chiropractors:
Two other factors have helped bring chiropractic effectiveness to the forefront. The first is the current crisis regarding prescription opioids, which has elevated the demand for safer, less harmful solutions to pain. The second is the healthcare community’s recognition that it can achieve better patient outcomes through collaborative care among healthcare providers with different areas of expertise.
While many still think of chiropractic care as a noninvasive, drug-free approach to helping people with back pain, chiropractic care can also help with other musculoskeletal issues.
Rachel Nall, R.N., B.S.N., CCRN, writing for Medical News Today in June 2018, acknowledges this, stating, “In fact, chiropractic care can also help to heal pain in the foot, elbow, shoulder, and neck.”
Perhaps the best evidence for chiropractic care is patient feedback. According to a Gallup-Palmer survey, 95% of recent chiropractic users rated it as effective, and nearly 9 of 10 patients would recommend chiropractic to family and friends.
