Eeeek! Choosing the right degree sounds simple enough until you realize there are a bazillion options out there. Don’t worry. Take a deep breath. You can and will choose what’s right for you by taking a strategic approach to choosing the college degree that’s right for you. Let’s say that you’re interested in a career in healthcare, but aren’t sure where to begin. In just four steps, we’ll walk through how to pick a degree that will help you land the job you want after college.
Today, we’ll start with step one of choosing the right degree.
Get Organized
Before you make any decisions, start by getting organized. Get a designated flash drive to store emails and information related to your degree search. If you want to share this information easily with a trusted advisor, you might consider storing your files in a Google Drive folder.
Once you have designated a place to save your electronic files, go ahead and set-up a few folders. Start with these: Careers of Interest, College Programs, My Strong Points. Use the Careers of Interest folder as a starting point to save anything and everything about jobs that interest you.
The College Programs file is for gathering data about any college degree program you research. And the My Strong Points folder is a place for you to collect career assessment results, your ACT/SAT scores and anything about you that would make you successful in the career that you desire after earning your degree.
You’re going to inevitably collect paper materials about the programs that you’re interested in pursuing. Now is the time to set-up an actual binder with folders to hold those documents. Start with the same three files mentioned earlier to catch the documents you receive.
Give yourself a deadline to get organized. This initial set-up can be done in as little as a day, so as they say, “don’t delay!” Once you have your initial get organized deadline in place, go ahead and create a timeline and deadlines to complete your decision process. The sooner you start, the more time you’ll have to spend on each of these steps. How much time you spend making your decision isn’t as important as actually making a decision. So, start with when you need to make a decision and work backward from that date to create a timeline. Here’s a worksheet to help you with this process.
Now that you know the first step, this is the perfect time to take a few minutes to get started. Go ahead and create those computer folders and look for a box, binder, or folders to designate for storing the info you will collect. Feeling ambitious?
