Here’s a step toward the right college degree that could seem a bit strange, but it’s critical and often overlooked. In step one you got organized, in step two you began self-assessment, and in step three, you will be thinking about where you want to be after you have your degree.
Start Job Searching
Yes, really. Start your job search before you begin looking for a degree. Doing so will allow you the opportunity to understand the work that you’ll be doing after you graduate. You want to have an idea of how you’re going to use that degree you’re earning. So, look at job descriptions and job requirements. Look at the earning potentials, too. They will give you a good idea of what type of degree you will need to land that dream job. Save your searches and your findings to keep organized.
If you know of people who have your dream job, now is the perfect time to ask them how they got the job. Find out how they got to where they are now and what their advice and recommendations are for people interested in the same line of work. What do they love about their work, and what are the biggest challenges? And remember, take notes!
If you don’t know of someone in the field or profession you’re interested in pursuing, you can reach out to the college and university admissions teams to get connected. You might be able to shadow someone for a day or attend a guest speaker event at a campus. CareerOneStop.org is another useful tool to explore professions that interest you.
You’ll know when you’re done with the job searching portion of this project when you have selected 1-3 ideal careers and the types of degrees needed to get you there. If your top-three career ideas all require the same degree, that’s great. If not, that’s okay too. Make sure that you’re sticking with the timeline that you developed in step one.
It’s easy to go down the rabbit hole of possibilities when you’re in this part of the process. Your timeline can keep you on track and out of time traps. And, here’s the key, yes you will be working for a degree, but before you get started, make sure the degree is going to be working for you.
