More than 150 Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) students and their guests attended the 2018 Cleveland College Foundation Scholarship & Awards Banquet held Dec. 7 on the CUKC campus.
The Foundation awarded 47 scholarships totaling $52,600, which was an increase over the total amount awarded for 2017. The award amounts varied, but no scholarship was less than $500, and all will be applied to the student’s tuition and fees during the spring 2019 term. The number of scholarships for 2018 increased as there were three new gifts established this year. The additions included: the Student Council Leadership Scholarship, the Dr. Cheryl Carpenter-Davis and Mr. Ken Davis Family Scholarship, and the Dr. Andrew Slavik Scholarship.
To qualify for scholarships, applicants had to meet the academic and administrative requirements, as well as submit an essay addressing a specific topic related to the scholarship, and why they should be considered for the award. Separate essays were necessary for each scholarship, although students could apply for multiple awards.
A total of 134 essays were submitted by 64 students, and members of the scholarship committee reviewed all essays. Winners were selected based on the fulfillment of the requirements, and the content of their essay. The awards were presented to the recipients by Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III, president, and Dr. Clark Beckley, vice president of campus and alumni relations.
Amy Piersol, vice president of development at CUKC, coordinated the event.
“The banquet is an opportunity for donors to see their gifts in action,” Piersol said. “It also presents an opportunity for students to think about ways they will be able to ‘pay it forward’ to others following their graduation from CUKC.”
The scholarships presented to CUKC students were made possible by donations to the Cleveland College Foundation Fund. Inc., a 501 c(3) not-for-profit organization. As the philanthropic arm of the institution, the Foundation exists to financially support the University’s mission of education, scholarship and service. All gifts to the University through the Cleveland College Foundation sustain and enhance these priorities within the mission.
