There’s arguably no better sports outing in Kansas City right now than a trip to Kauffman Stadium to watch the red-hot Royals play in defense of their 2014 American League Championship. That was made wildly apparent when tickets for the 13th annual “Cleveland Day at the Royals” event sold out in record time.
Then, on June 6, more than 450 Clevelanders – consisting of students, faculty, staff, alumni and their family and friends – converged on “The K” for the Royals game against the Texas Rangers. A capacity crowd of nearly 38,000 cheered on their AL Central-leading Royals in a tough contest that ended in a 4-2 loss.
In its 13th year, Cleveland’s Royals event is one of the most popular social events of the year, encouraging camaraderie among all Clevelanders. It features a catered tailgate party, complete with backyard barbecue favorites, ice-cold beverages and an afternoon of Royals baseball.
“The atmosphere for every Royals game this year is electric because the fans know what this team can do,” Jalonna Bowie, director of student services and coordinator of the event, said. “It’s become a huge tradition at Cleveland. Our students, faculty and staff are great fans of all our hometown teams, but with the Royals recent return to glory, it’s a fantastic event to continue providing.
Cleveland student Kristen Simpson (X) thoroughly enjoyed the event.
“Nothing is better than mixing chiropractic and the Royals!” Simpson said. “It was a blast and I enjoyed bringing my Nebraska friends in to enjoy the festivities.”
Simpson’s sentiment was shared by others, including clinician Dr. Richard Day.
“Our family had a great day out a The K!” Day said. “The food was great and the company was even better. The college really goes the extra mile to make this a special event for students and faculty alike!”
Even in a losing effort, the Royals showed the moxie that is becoming this team’s trademark by holding the Rangers scoreless the last seven innings and scoring two late runs. The Cleveland contingent, like all fans, left the ballpark energized and ready for another magical season.
