Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) will once again join members of the Kansas Independent College Association in waiving its application fee this October as part of its month-long participation in “Apply Kansas.” The statewide initiative seeks to increase the number of those Kansans who apply and enroll in college, or other postsecondary learning endeavors.
Waiving the application fee is a way to eliminate a potential barrier for those seeking to pursue higher education. The absence of the fee is particularly beneficial for first-generation students, those from economically challenged households, or those who may not otherwise pursue college at all.
Apply Kansas was launched in 2015 as part of the 50-state American College Application Campaign by the American Council on Education. Melissa Denton, director of admissions at CUKC, said the initiative, along with other efforts by her team, definitely make things easier for prospective students.
“Waiving the application fee for CUKC, especially during this pandemic, is one way that CUKC can assist first generation college students as they work on college applications,” Denton said. “In fact, we also assist with travel expenses for campus visits for any student outside a three-hour drive because we believe the campus tour is such an important component of selecting the right university.”
In addition, Kansas residents may also benefit from the new “Promise Act Scholarship” passed earlier this year to assist eligible Kansas students seeking to attend the university’s College of Health Sciences A.A.S degree programs. In exchange for receiving the scholarship, recipients must live and work in Kansas after completing their degree program.
