The Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) Chiropractic Health Center will host its first ever “Move 4 Life 5K” run/walk on Saturday, March 30, 2019, from 7-9 a.m. Runners from across the Kansas City metro and beyond are registering now for this event that will begin and end on the CUKC campus. Proceeds from the event will benefit Camp MITIOG, a summer camp that is wheelchair accessible to accommodate children with Spina Bifida.
According to the American Chiropractic Association, research shows that movement throughout a lifetime can be beneficial for a variety of conditions as we age. Not only can it help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes, it also builds bone and muscle strength, increases joint flexibility and prevents back pain. The Move 4 Life 5K was developed in an effort to encourage increased physical activity for participants regardless of their level of athleticism. At the same time, participants will be helping support children who attend Camp MITIOG.
“The Move 4 Life 5K is a wonderful way to utilize the CUKC campus in a show of support for better health and the children at Camp MITIOG who will, with our help, continue to experience summer activities just as other kids do,” Jalonna Bowie, director of campus and alumni relations said. “Uniting area runners with our campus community for such a worthwhile cause displays the very best of humanity.”
Spina Bifida is a congenital condition where the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly. Those afflicted commonly have physical disabilities ranging from minor to significant, and in some cases, can also struggle with mobility issues. The CUKC Chiropractic Health Center wants to make sure that these children can experience all of the fun that summer has to offer, and Camp MITIOG makes that possible.
While attending camp, the children can enjoy a week of activities that include swimming, fishing, canoeing, arts and crafts, and self-help classes. The campers experience all of this at Lake Doniphan Conference and Retreat Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo. The camp is accredited by the American Camp Association and has been held each summer for nearly 50 years.
