Beginning in fall 2023, Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) will offer a graduate certificate in sports performance. The CUKC Graduate Certificate in Sports Performance (CSP) will be a 12-credit-hour program offered in 8-week modules through the University’s College of Health Sciences. The program can be completed in one academic term, or three academic terms, and coursework is entirely online.
The CSP is designed for those in health, fitness, wellness, and sports-related fields, including future and current doctors of chiropractic. It can also be the ideal educational “next step” for coaches, athletic trainers, and other performance professionals who work with everyone from high school teams to professional athletes, to “weekend warriors.”
The certificate will be beneficial for those interested in next-level information regarding physiology, nutrition, and individualized training methods. For those seeking a better understanding of an athlete’s movement patterns, muscle imbalances, and injury risks, the CSP program can provide the advanced educational coursework needed to meet those goals as well.
Areas explored within the CSP include:
Dr. Diane Bartholomew, vice president of academic affairs at CUKC, said she is excited about the benefits the CSP program can provide to those who choose to pursue it.
“Graduate-level coursework of this kind will provide individuals with additional expertise in sports performance, and can open doors to more opportunities with sports teams, fitness centers, rehabilitation clinics, and performance enhancement centers,” Bartholomew said. “The specialized knowledge acquired from our certificate curriculum can set candidates apart from the competition during job applications and interviews, increasing their chances of securing employment.”
A comprehensive sports performance program like this would also benefit those with bachelor’s degrees in kinesiology, exercise science, athletic training, or other health and fitness areas. In addition, all courses in the CSP program are required components of the Master of Science (M.S.) in Exercise Physiology and Sports Performance degree at CUKC, so pursuing the certificate will allow for a quick start to an additional degree, if desired.
