An artist posthumously donated to the Cleveland Chiropractic College in appreciation for the treatment she received there late in her life.
Helen King Boyer left the gift of nearly $270,000 to the college, in part for the care she received as a patient in the 1980s and 1990s. This gift, now under the stewardship of the Cleveland College Foundation Fund, is designated as the “Helen King Boyer Scholarship Fund.” The investment interest from this bequest is to be used to award scholarships to students pursuing completion of the Doctor of Chiropractic degree at the College of Chiropractic, Cleveland University – Kansas City.
“Miss Boyer demonstrated great kindness in leaving this gift for our current and future students,” said Dr. Clark Beckley, Vice President of Campus and Alumni Relations, at Cleveland. “We’re pleased that the gift came about because of the caring relationship she had with our interns over many years.”
Boyer was bedridden for much of the first 10 years of her life by a lymphatic condition. Boyer passed away in North Kansas City in 2012 and funds from her estate are now being distributed.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Boyer studied art at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Technical Institute. During her career, Boyer worked as a printmaker and as a designer for several toy companies. Most recently, April-August, 2012, an exhibition of prints by Boyer and her mother hung in the Lauinger Library Art Gallery at Georgetown University, where Helen donated her family’s works. Related to the exhibit Boyer and her mother were the subjects of a Georgetown senior art student’s thesis, “The Boyer Family: Mother-Daughter, Innovative Printmakers.”
