I can finally say that I’m halfway done with the chiropractic program here at Cleveland University-Kansas City. I am reaching the point in the program that I am finally starting to see all of my hard work pay off. It is also the point where everything we have learned so far is starting to come together and we are learning to apply it to real life situations. In this trimester we are starting to learn the ins and outs of working in the clinic which we will be able to do in just a couple of trimesters.
One of the classes that is preparing us for the clinic is Intro to Clinic I. This class teaches us how to take a proper patient history, document the patient’s complaint, write up our own assessment of the patient’s problem, and develop a care plan. We are required to dress in business attire and this includes our white coat. We take turns being the patient for each other and each week we learn another part of what it is like to be in the clinic.
While I know we still have a long way to go, it’s great to finally get a taste of what we are working towards. Deciding to become a doctor is obviously a big commitment. And honestly, every once in a while, it can be exhausting and a little bit discouraging. That’s what makes these moments like performing our first adjustment, taking our first clinic class, and going to our business card ceremony even that more special. These moments that occur throughout our time here help us see the light at the end of the tunnel and motivate us to keep working hard towards that day when we will finally be able to call ourselves doctors.
