When I moved from my small town in Oklahoma to attend Cleveland University-Kansas City in Overland Park, Kansas, I was pretty nervous. I moved into an apartment on my own and I didn’t know anyone in the area. My main focus was to study hard and do well in my classes, but I was hopeful that I would meet some great people along the way. Luckily, on my very first day, at orientation, I sat down at a table of girls and we have all been friends ever since.
In the Doctor of Chiropractic program, there are some long class days. You share most of the classes with the same people you started with in the program. This means that you are around the same people most of the time and have the opportunity to get to know them really well. These people quickly become like your family. They know what you are going through because they are in the same situation themselves. Being in class all day with the girls I met at the CUKC orientation allowed us to get to know each other very quickly.
Without my close group of friends, I don’t know how I would have made it through this program. It’s really nice when a class gets difficult, or when I am just stressed, to have people to turn to that understand what I’m going through. We all lean on each other, work together, and encourage each other to get through the program. At the end of finals each trimester, we get together and celebrate making it through another trimester. We do our best to celebrate special events together, whether they are in school or in our personal lives.
Within our group, we have attended a wedding, welcomed a baby, and now I am getting to plan my own wedding with the help of these girls. It is so great to have them by my side while I’m planning my big day. Being a student and planning a wedding is difficult at times, so it is great to have them around me to help me through everything, and I cannot wait to have them there on my special day.
Every once in a while we look back on our first day at orientation and laugh at how lucky we were to meet each other at the very beginning. I look forward to finishing school with these girls, and continuing to celebrate our accomplishments together throughout our lives. I am so thankful that I’ve gotten to share this experience of becoming a chiropractor while surrounding myself with such special people, and I cannot wait to see what the future hold for each of us.
