Every summer trimester at Cleveland University-Kansas City (CU-KC) we have an event, Founders Day. Founders Day is a morning filled with alternative learning experiences for the students, followed by a delicious lunch. The trimester you are in within the program determines what presenters you will have the opportunity to listen to and engage with. For instance, first years normally get to hear from a panel of four doctors of chiropractic. Since this year I was in my second year at Cleveland, I had the opportunity to hone in on my adjusting skills and start to explore other adjusting techniques offered at CU-KC.
While I love adjusting and getting to learn new techniques from our instructors at Cleveland, my favorite part of the event this year was the main speaker, Dr. Bill Moreau, D.C., DACBSP®, C.S.C.S. Dr. Moreau will be traveling to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio as the medical director for team USA. As medical director, he will oversee the medical doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists and doctors of chiropractic treating the hundreds of athletes competing for the United States.
Sitting and listening to Dr. Moreau speak was inspiring because we, as chiropractors, are always fighting for our rights, and to know that a doctor of chiropractic is overseeing the entire medical team going to the 2016 Rio Games is exhilarating. On top of that, he also shared a statistic from the 2014 Sochi Olympics that 10 D.C.s provided one-third of all services performed for team USA athletes in Sochi. That’s pretty amazing, if you ask me. I also enjoyed hearing how the different constituents of the medical team do not view each other as competition, but rather they work together as a team to provide the best care to the athletes. That teamwork to provide the patient with the best care possible is our ultimate goal as healthcare providers, and to know that it is occurring is exciting.
In the past 120 years chiropractic has come a long way. From doctors being incarcerated, to now having a chiropractor as the medical director for team USA at the Rio Olympics. Thank you Dr. Bill Moreau for breaking through yet another barrier and instilling a drive in CU-KC students to make their own breakthroughs within the chiropractic profession.
