More than 5,000 people converged on the Overland Park campus of Cleveland University-Kansas City (CU-KC) for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual “Light the Night” walk Sept. 20. The event is held each year to draw attention to the fight against cancer. This is the second year CU-KC has hosted the event.
The site was abuzz with activity as people from throughout the metro began to arrive on campus. As late afternoon drifted into twilight, attendees were able to enjoy several exhibition booths and activities, and younger walkers enjoyed face painting, balloon artists, as well as music and cheer performances from local high school students.
When night fell, there were fireworks and the “Light the Night” walk. Participants held lighted items as they walked the path around the CU-KC campus in a symbolic act to illuminate the dark world of cancer.
