As I am in my last year at Cleveland University-Kansas City, I feel I can provide some insight or suggestions on the phases of our chiropractic program. There are phases and mentalities that change as a student progresses through the curriculum. The phases start with a visit to the campus and, I can imagine, end with graduation. Here’s an abridged timeline of the chiropractic program at Cleveland:
1. Official Visit – Coming to Cleveland to shadow students and talk with staff got me excited about studying here. I remember the thrill of thinking about my future after graduation. Spirits and hopes were high.
2. Applying – The application process wasn’t terribly difficult. I was excited and curious about who I might get to meet and what I might learn. Getting accepted was cause for celebration.
3. First Day of Classes – It was great to see who I would study with the next three years and sit in on the first lectures. It was a bit overwhelming but still exciting.
4. The First Year – The year was packed with studying, tests, adapting to grad school life, and boy did it go fast. I quickly became friends with classmates and learned things about human biology I never imagined I would. I also completed my first adjustment!
5. The Second Year – This went by even faster than the first. I got used to the exams and studying. I found my balance and flow. Adjusting classes were plentiful. I started attending seminars. I took my first National Board exam. It seemed like it was more work than the first year, but not quite as difficult. The new excitement was gone, but I hit my stride.
6. The Third Year – I am halfway through my third year, and I now think about my plans after graduation every day. It’s so close! Classes have eased up, but I spend much more time in the clinic. I’m happy to be here. This is what I came for. My time here has passed quickly, but I’m getting more excited to open my own practice.
7. Graduation – If I had to guess, this will be an extremely joyous day. I hope to have all my post-graduation plans set up and ready to implement when I walk across the stage. Spirits will be high.
