“Chiropractic school is no walk in the park. I like to think of school beginning as a passionate goal, then continuing with a whole lot of commitment. We are expected to balance our professional and personal lives amongst studying for exams, attending seminars to perfect our practice and some students even commit to a part-time job in addition to it all. I’ve done it and have to admit that though it is a lot, I find this program at Cleveland University-Kansas City was so doable.” – Dr. Makenna Rommelfanger
I did not decide to attend chiropractic school until my junior year of undergraduate, but I did plan on attending some form of a graduate program for as long as I can remember. Because of this, I made sure to take my education seriously from the start, which is probably the best decision I could have made for myself. Though I was probably too hard on myself grade-wise, I am thankful for my dedication to a future health career then, as I think it has been the foundation of the doctor I am trying to be now.
I was the high school girl who jam-packed her schedule, not always loving the late nights and minimal free time but getting through it week by week. I was involved in a million clubs (slightly lower than a million in reality), some of which I wasn’t even interested in. Student council, student ambassadors, the drama club, LIFE group, tennis, track, dance team…you name it, and I did it. My mentality was that I had to be the best I could be at all of it. Insane, I now know.
Somehow I fit 5+ hours of dance training in after I left school each day for the dance company. I would get home most of the nights after 10 p.m., and then it was time to focus on my school work, which I held to an even higher standard. I had time for friends because I was involved in so many things with them. I just didn’t have much free time for myself.
Though the activities changed, my college schedule was just as packed. I was so accustomed to having somewhere to be or something to do, that I continued to fill my free time with part-time jobs. Yes, I needed to chill the heck out. Yes, I could have prepared myself for chiropractic school without a few of the commitments I had made. Yes, I needed a nap. But the point is, constantly being so busy has helped me to use my time wisely here. I am so thankful for the late nights and the hard work because it’s become my standard.
Looking back, I was insane for putting all of that pressure on myself. I don’t regret my focus; I just wish I had given myself fewer “extras” to focus on. But I also learned that it’s all mind over matter, and if you have a passion for something, there’s nothing that should be able to get in the way of you achieving it. Not even a ridiculously packed schedule.
