Cleveland University-Kansas City is one of the earliest chiropractic educational institutions to start adjusting, compared to other nationwide colleges. Right from the get-go you have your hands on patients.
During the first trimester, you learn static palpation. This involves learning where the bony landmarks are located and includes the vertebral spinous processes, vertebral transverse processes, PSIS, and bony landmarks of the scapula. Students will learn to feel what is normal and abnormal regarding placement and tissue tone.
In the second trimester, the student learns motion palpation. This class consists of learning range of motion for vertebral segments and hip bones. Restrictions in the form of subluxations are learned and felt in motion palpation. The student will learn to feel what restricts a vertebral segment from normal movements.
In trimester three, the favorite class of many students, D.C. students do their first chiropractic adjustment. A ceremonial picture is taken, and the student’s first adjustment will be performed. In most cases, the first adjustment will consist of a thoracic adjustment. From there, the student will learn lumbar and SI adjustments as well. These technique classes are a great change-up after being drilled with core science classes throughout the beginning trimesters. In trimester four students will learn the specifics of cervical adjustments. The D.C. student will spend the whole fourth-trimester learning cervical, atlas, axis, and occiput adjustments.
Finally, techniques five and six will be completed in the D.C.’s trimester 5 of 10, or 6 of 12. Technique five will consist of extremity adjustments involving everything dealing with hands, feet, shoulders, hips, arms, legs, wrists, and ankles.
Technique six will consist of soft tissue mobilization. There, students will learn how to properly analyze abnormal soft tissue tones with stretching, mobilization, physical tests, and tools. In all of these technique classes, the D.C. student will start to carve out their skill set and fine-tune their skills to how they want to practice once they graduate.
